June's VIP features overview of 2006 survey results
by researcher Jane McConnell

Strategic deployment of intranets remains a challenge for companies of all sizes. Intranet consultant Jane McConnell has made an in-depth study of global intranets, under the auspices of her company, NetStrategy/JMC http://www.netjmc.com/. She comments on the results of her 2006 survey in her featured contribution to June's VIP magazine, 'Why is your intranet not delivering its potential?'

Among her findings:

  • Intranets are crucial for employees to get their work done. In 55% of organisations, employees said their work would be disturbed if the intranet were down for one to two hours, and another 26% would be disturbed if it were down for a full day.

  • Senior-level managers, however, are somewhat disconnected from the importance of the intranet to their employees' productivity: In only 13% of cases did senior management consider the intranet to be 'business critical'.

  • Intranets are considered information tools, more than productivity or collaboration tools, let alone business development resources. The potential for intranets to support business goals has not yet been realised.

NetStrategy/JMC's 2006 research included 101 organisations with headquarters in Europe (58%), North America (29%) and Asia-Pacific (12%). The company is currently seeking participants for the 2007 survey. All participants will receive a copy of the study findings when they are published in the autumn.
