But most don't learn how to search properly...Knowing how to find information on the Internet is one of the most important skills a high school or university student can have. But most students don't take the time to learn how to conduct their research properly...Librarians can be a valuable resource manager in a student's quest to search the Internet for print, video, audio or other material. They can also assist with tips on how to use search engines and directories in order to narrow down a search...Often, students will "place too much faith in search engines, figuring they'll just type in a couple of words and the search engine will find what they're looking for," says Internet author and consultant Rick Broadhead."

Library News "A Time Inc. Institution Will Close Its Doors" AOL Time Warner set to close main research library. Source: NY Times Search Engines--Pay-For-Placement Search Engines--GoTo.com "Paid Placement Is Catching On in Web Searches" Source: NY Times From the article, "We think the marketer's interest in targeting is equal to the user's interest in relevance," said Ted Meisel, GoTo's chief executive. "But our job is not only to enhance search results. It is also to provide a revenue stream to our partners." Comment: We may forget that the general search tools are or attempt to be profit-making organizations. Priority number one is not to put the most timely, accurate, and authoritative in your hands in a timely matter but rather to serve the needs of their companies. This DOES NOT mean that general search tools don't serve an essential role. They do. However, after reading about GoTo.com's success realize pay-for-placement (and paid entry) is here to stay. Therefore, we must: *Alert users to pay-for-placement links that are incorporated into results pages and that search optimization people work to get their clients listings at the top of the non-paid results. *STRESS, the importance of going beyone just typing a word or two into the search box, being as specific as possible with search strategiess, and learning to limit where possible. If they don't use these techniques alert them that the BEST answer may not be at the top of the results page. *Be aware that many paid placement only engines make up many of the search tools that meta search engines utilize. See Danny Sullivan’s recent article on this subject. *Take full advantage of focused/targeted crawlers that do not have pay-for-placement obligations. In fact, many of these tools can make portions of the "opaque web" easily accessible. -- Thanks to BQ for the tip. There are generally two kinds of fees they charge: paid listings, in which customers pay for their sites to be included in a search provider's directory or index, and paid placements, in which sites are guaranteed the top spots in searches that contain specific keywords...But in the end, there's the question of whether the supposed taint of paid-for search results even matters. Ironically, the good will in Google's refusal to offer paid submissions into its index may be lost on many Web users."
